The Tribute Money. Peter Finding the Silver Coin in the Mouth of the Fish. Also called "The Ferry Boat to Antwerp"

Jacob Jordaens

1616-1634

The boat yaws. A heavy gust of wind has caught the sail which the deckhand is setting. Another deckhand on his left is putting all his strength behind the oar which he is poling the boat with. He is a stocky man like his crew-mate, and attired only in a loincloth. He looks straight at us. His space becomes ours, and ours becomes his. We become the focus of his gaze just as the painting is of ours.
