Woodcock at Dusk

Francis Barlow

ca. 1686

Francis Barlow probably made sketches from life that he later worked up in oil on pieces of canvas back in the studio. Given the size of this canvas and the repetition of the woodcocks in similar poses in other pictures, this may have been one of Barlow’s working canvases, kept on hand and used as the model for finished paintings.
