Privacy

Blick is a free, non-commercial website for looking at and learning about paintings. It has no accounts, no forms, no ads, and it sets no cookies. This page explains the little data that is processed when you visit it.

Who is responsible

Blick is a private project by Sebastian Wieser. Contact: hello@blick.gallery

Hosting and delivery (Cloudflare)

The website and its images are delivered by Cloudflare, Inc., 101 Townsend St., San Francisco, CA 94107, USA. To send you the pages, Cloudflare necessarily processes your IP address and technical request data (date and time, the address requested, browser and operating system, referring page). Cloudflare also uses this data to protect the site against attacks and abuse. We do not receive or keep these logs ourselves.

Legal basis: our legitimate interest in delivering the website securely and reliably (Art. 6(1)(f) GDPR). Cloudflare processes this data on our behalf under its data processing agreement. Data may be processed in the USA; Cloudflare is certified under the EU–US Data Privacy Framework, and the EU Standard Contractual Clauses also apply. More: cloudflare.com/privacypolicy.

Full-size images from Cleveland and Wikimedia

When you open a painting, its sharpest image is loaded directly from the source: the Cleveland Museum of Art (openaccess-cdn.clevelandart.org, USA) for works in its collection, or Wikimedia Commons (upload.wikimedia.org, Wikimedia Foundation, USA) for the other works. For this, your browser sends your IP address and technical request data to those servers. Legal basis: our legitimate interest in showing the paintings in good quality from their original source (Art. 6(1)(f) GDPR). See the Cleveland Museum of Art's privacy policy and the Wikimedia Foundation's privacy policy.

Visitor statistics (Umami)

To understand how many people visit and which pages they look at, we use Umami Cloud, a privacy-friendly analytics service, with data stored in its EU region. Umami does not use cookies and does not store anything on your device. Your IP address is not stored: it is only used briefly to work out your country and, together with your browser details and a regularly changing random value, to create an anonymous visit identifier that cannot be traced back to you.

What is recorded: the pages you view, the referring website, browser, operating system, device type, screen size, language and country. We use this only in aggregate and keep it for 6 months. If your browser sends a “Do Not Track” signal, nothing is recorded.

Legal basis: our legitimate interest in understanding, in aggregate, how the site is used so we can improve it (Art. 6(1)(f) GDPR). Umami processes this data on our behalf under its data processing agreement. Some of Umami's service providers (for example for content delivery and security) are based in the USA; see umami.is/subprocessors. You can object at any time (see below), or simply enable “Do Not Track” or a content blocker.

Fonts

All fonts are served from this website. No connection is made to font services such as Google Fonts.

Links to other websites

Paintings link to their museum pages, Wikipedia and Wikimedia Commons. Those sites are only contacted if you click a link; from then on, their privacy policies apply.

Where your data goes

Cloudflare and some of Umami's providers are in the USA; Umami stores analytics in the EU. These transfers are covered by the providers' data processing agreements, the EU Standard Contractual Clauses and, for Cloudflare, the EU–US Data Privacy Framework.

Your rights

You have the right to access the data we hold about you, to get a copy of it, to have it corrected or deleted, to restrict its processing, and to object to processing based on legitimate interest (Art. 15–21 GDPR). Note that we usually cannot identify you from the data above. To use these rights, email hello@blick.gallery.

You can also complain to the data protection authority of the country where you live.

Images and texts

Paintings from The Cleveland Museum of Art Open Access (images and texts CC0). Other works: images from Wikimedia Commons (public domain); texts quoted and adapted from the English Wikipedia under CC BY-SA 4.0, with a link to each article next to the text. Blick is free and non-commercial.
