A Wooded Lane
Richard Parkes Bonington
ca. 1825
At the 1824 Paris Salon, Constable’s paintings caused a sensation. He was awarded a gold medal alongside fellow Englishman Bonington, who spent much of his short but brilliant career in France. Although the two never met, Bonington studied Constable’s paintings in Paris. The latter’s influence on Bonington can be seen here in the rapid, confident application of paint and in the vibrant color palette, from a range of greens to smaller flashes of red.
