Dort, or Dordrecht: The Dort Packet-Boat from Rotterdam Becalmed
Joseph Mallord William Turner
1818
This painting demonstrates Turner’s ambition to rival the great landscape painters of the past. Its composition reworks Aelbert Cuyp’s celebrated The Maas at Dordrecht (ca. 1650). Turner, though, wanted to outdo his predecessor’s diffuse golden light, introducing a richer palette that gives the scene extraordinary luminosity. While the painting initially creates a feeling of calm, it includes many vivid details inspired by Turner’s visit to the Dutch port during his second Continental tour in 1817. The central ferry teems with passengers, cargo, and activity. This combination of dazzling color and close observation so impressed critics that fellow artist John Constable called it “the most complete work of genius I ever saw.”
