Evening, Bayswater
John Linnell
1818
As these two evening scenes show, John Linnell and Constable shared a commitment to naturalism, but the two painters were for some time professional rivals. In 1821 Linnell attributed his rejection by the Royal Academy to Constable, who was probably uneasy with Linnell’s working-class roots and his radical political and religious convictions. However, over time, the two reconciled their differences and mutual respect ensued.
